Family History
(The following is Roberta’s obituary)
BURLEY - Roberta Rasmussen Jones slipped quietly from this life on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at the age of 87. At the time of her death, she was a resident of the Spanish Fork Nursing and Rehab facility in Spanish Fork, Utah.
From August 1967 until September 2008, Roberta lived in Burley, among numerous friends and family members. She moved to Spanish Fork to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Christine Jones and their family for the last 16 months of her life. The family will always cherish this time of special closeness. They express their deep appreciation to the nursing home staff for their loving and professional care.
Roberta was born to Jens Edward Rasmussen and Sarah Jane Darrington on Jan. 2, 1923, in Elba, Idaho. She grew up on the farm with five brothers during the Great Depression. During her youth, when she wasn't in school, she spent her time preparing food, keeping house, doing laundry, and working with the animals and garden. Yet, the slower pace of life in those days also gave her ample time to appreciate the beauties of nature beneath her beloved Mt. Independence. She attended high school in Malta, Idaho.
Roberta married a young local businessman named Floyd Tracy of Yost, Utah, in 1941. They had two sons, Floyd Stewart and Charles Douglas. In the late 1940s, Roberta became a licensed practical nurse and the family moved to Brigham City, Utah. She worked at Cooley Memorial Hospital for the next 18 years and found herself in the giving of comfort to others. Roberta and Floyd divorced in 1955.
Roberta married Ross Jones of Brigham City in 1957, and they had two sons, Paul Edward and Keith Ross. Keith died at the age of 11 days in 1959. Ross and Roberta were lifelong members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their parents taught them the gospel. As young adults they both drifted some from their faith, but after Keith's death they determined to change the course of their lives. In 1963, they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple to each other and to their little boys for time and eternity.
In 1966, the little family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where Ross and Roberta held various jobs. Severe earthquakes and flooding prompted them to relocate to Burley in August of 1967. Roberta worked at Van Engelen's Department Store for a year, then worked for the next 17 years in the Merc Department Store. She loved fabric and sewing and working with the public.
Roberta was a gifted mother. She read to Paul as a little boy and conversed with him hours on end about every topic imaginable. She taught faith, hope and charity, a love for the simple gifts of life and the joy of learning. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and caring for her yard. She and Ross cared for all four-legged creatures, large and small.
Roberta was a true Latter-day Saint. She learned from her experience to turn to the Lord and depend on him. She loved the scriptures and teaching the gospel. She cared for a number of widows left alone by their own children. She held various positions in the Sunday school, Primary and Relief Society and was a service missionary at the Church Distribution Center.
Roberta was preceded in death by her father and mother; her brothers, Joel Rasmussen, Floyd Rasmussen and Ralph Rasmussen; her infant son, Keith Ross; and her second husband, Ross Jones.
She is survived by her brothers, Elmo Rasmussen (Faye) and Robert Rasmussen (June); her first husband, Floyd Tracy; her sons, Floyd Stewart Tracy (Vickie), Charles Douglas Tracy and Paul Edward Jones (Christine); and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Burley LDS 2nd Ward Church, 515 E. 16th St. in Burley, with Bishop Clay Handy officiating. Burial will follow at the Brigham City Cemetery in Brigham City, Utah. Friends may call from 9 until 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.
