Family History
Sarah Jane Darrington was born November 3, 1889, in Elba Idaho to John Darrington and Sarah Maria Perry. John Darrington married Sarah Maria Perry February 8, 1887 in Willard, Utah. It was a second marriage for both of them. John Darrington was widowed in 1886 when his first wife, Sarah Jane Lowe died leaving him with 4 children. Sarah Maria Perry was left a widow with 4 children upon the death of her first husband, William Stokes, Jr. in 1885. The union of John Darrington and Sarah Maria Perry produced 7 children. With the mix of “yours”, “mine”, and “ours” it made for a large blended family.
Sarah Jane was baptized by her father into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 13, 1897, at the age of 8. She was confirmed a member of the Church and received the Gift of the Holy Ghost the next day, November 14, 1897, under the hands of Osmer Fred Beecher.
Sarah Jane was married to Jens Edward Rasmussen December 21, 1910, in the Salt Lake Temple by Anthon H. Lund. They originally lived in Elba, Idaho where their first child, Joel Edward was born. They moved to Declo, Idaho, where Floyd Hans, Ralph Waldo, and Elmo were born. Sometime thereafter they moved back to Elba where the twins, Roberta and Robert joined the family.
Sarah loved the Lord and had a strong testimony of the restored Gospel.
Sarah raised her children during the Great Depression. The family farmed 50 acres in Elba and raised a garden and a few farm animals. Cash was scarce. Sarah was very frugal with what they had. I remember her being in our home during her later years. She ate every morsel of food on her plate, cleaned any residue off with a slice of bread, and left nothing more than a clean chicken bone on her plate. It left me with the impression that she had experienced days of “wanting”.
Sarah was left a widow at age 61 when Jens Edward died March 24, 1950. She spent the next 14 years mostly living by herself in Oakley, Idaho. She died October 16, 1964, in Burley, Idaho. I remember my mom and dad coming home from the hospital and telling us children that she had passed. It was very sad. I was 5.
